Mexican women: more empowered than BRIC’s

In a previous article we analyzed the statistics available on the Human Development Index (HDI), and showed how Mexico measures against other countries.
Worldmapper.org, a project published by the University of Sheffield, has also released very interesting data on gender empowerment and particularly on women empowerment.
Just like HDI, this Gender Empowerment Measure (GEM) is calculated by the United Nations Development Program on a similar basis to the HDI, but focusing on women’s opportunities rather than the capabilities of both men and women. The GEM components are: the female share of parliamentary …

Lincoln and Juárez honored together in Chicago

When president Obama visited Mexico earlier this year, he made reference to the parallelisms between two icons of Mexican and American history: Benito Juárez and Abraham Lincoln.
A few months later, the lives of these two extraordinary ex-presidents are celebrated with two exhibitions at Chicago’s History Museum as part of the commemoration of Abraham Lincoln’s bicentennial.
The life of Benito Juarez (1806-1872) is legendary. Born in a small village in the Mexican southern state of Oaxaca and from very humble origins, he embarked in his pursuit to reform Mexico in the …

Mexico, like many countries, has implemented an array of strategies to protect the environment and the current quality of life of its citizens. An article in the British newspaper The Guardian recently mentioned the Zero Emissions program in Mexico City as an example …

TheCatalist interview on radio, TV and online

On September 29, I was invited to be a guest at Eduardo Ruiz-Healy’s TV and radio show to discuss TheCatalist.org.
Ruiz-Healy is probably one of the best-known and most controversial journalists that currently work in Mexico’s media scene.
During the nine-minute interview, I had the opportunity to present the concept behind TheCatalist: a project committed to strengthening Mexico’s image, both internally and externally, from a positive and empowering context that allows all of us to take individual responsibility and make a difference.
Eduardo’s questions helped me offer concrete examples on the message that …

Mexico leading race against climate change

Mexico has taken a forerunner’s position in the race against climate change by committing to implement a very ambitious program backed by the Interamerican Development Bank (IDB).
The $400 million programme is focused on mitigating green gas emissions and giving strength to climate-related institutions in the country. This is the second loan approved by the IDB to support Mexico’s green agenda.
“Mexico is one of the very few developing economies that are adopting emission reduction targets in advance of the U.N.’s Copehangen conference on climate change in December,” said Juan Pablo …
